What’s the difference between an apprenticeship and a traineeship?

DIFFERENCES

Apprenticeships teach skills in trades such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical, building and construction, etc. It takes approximately 3-4 years to complete a full time apprenticeship and become a qualified tradesperson.

Traineeships are shorter and generally take 1-2 years to complete full time. Traineeships offer a broad range of vocational and occupational choices that can include Information Technology, Children’s Services, Business Administration, Aged Care or Hospitality. On completion, you will receive a national recognised qualification in your chosen area.

Most importantly, no matter what career path you choose to take, you are likely to find an apprenticeship or traineeship that matches your career goals.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships

SCHOOL AGED

If you’re a high school student, keen to kickstart your career, you might want to explore an apprenticeship or traineeship as part of your studies.

Students aged 15 years of age or older are eligible to apply for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships.  Part of your training will need to be undertaken during your school timetable, and you’ll need to gain approval from your school. This learning can contribute toward your high school certificate or Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR).

You should also be aware that school-based apprenticeships and traineeships are part-time, with many apprentices and trainees continuing on a full-time contract with their employers after leaving school.

These apprenticeships are generally full-time but can be part-time depending on the role.
