Apprenticeship or Traineeship ?
'Australian Apprenticeships' is a new term that covers both the traditional Apprenticeships and Traineeships.
What are Apprenticeships and Traineeships
Apprenticeships and Traineeships are very similar, both offer training on-the-job, off-the-job or a combination of both and lead to an nationally recognised and accredited qualification. The main differences are:
- Apprenticeships
Trade based occupations, completed over 3 or 4 years full-time
(eg. mechanic, hairdresser, chef, carpenter, brick layer)
- Traineeships
All non-trade based occupations, completed over 1 or 2 years full / part time
(eg. real estate, finance, retail, multimedia, local government)
Australian Apprenticeships are 'competency based'. This means it may be possible for an Australian Apprentice to complete their training sooner if they have reached the skill level required. It is even possible to start an Australian Apprenticeship while still at school.
