- Prepare for the interview
How Do I Do That?
- Check your wardrobe for clothes that will match the culture. Make sure that your clothes are laundered and dry-cleaned.
- Plan out how you are going to get to that interview. You will need to write down the address and phone number of the company. Decide what type of transport you will use to get there. If it is public transport make sure that you have a timetable. If you are relying on someone else, add a half hour to your planned arrival and departure time so that you will arrive at the interview on time.
- Allow for last minute hitches such as a traffic jam. Plan to get there half an hour early.
- Know the correct pronunciation of the interviewer's name.
- Refresh your memory on the information on your FORMER employer. List your previous duties/responsibilities. think of specific examples of tasks and duties you performed in your previous employment.
- Prepare a list of questions to ask the interviewer.
- Think of questions that the employer will ask you. Practise your answers.
- Know you market value. Be prepared to specify your required salary or range, if asked.
The Interview
The interview is your only opportunity to sell yourself.
- Use action words like 'I organised', 'I initiated'.
- Use concise, simple language.
- Speak clearly.
- If given an application form to fill out - fill it out neatly and completely.
- Greet the interviewer by using their Surname.
- Shake hands firmly.
- Wait until you are offered a chair before sitting.
- The employer will expect you to do 70% of the talking during the interview.
- Don't answer questions with a simple 'yes' or 'no'. Explain whenever possible and relate the question to your experience.
- Make them realise how they need you in their organisation.
- Don't lie - Be truthful in your answers.
- Thank the interviewer for their time at the end of the interview.
